Every Type of Energy, Explained

From traditional electricity and gas to cutting-edge solar and green energy — we break down every option so you can choose what works best for your home and budget.

Electricity
Electricity powers almost every aspect of modern life — lighting, heating, appliances, and electric vehicles. Most UK and US households pay a unit rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Understanding your usage pattern is the first step to cutting costs. Fixed-rate tariffs lock in a price for security; variable-rate tariffs can save money when wholesale prices drop. Smart meters give you real-time insight into consumption, helping you shift usage to cheaper off-peak periods.
🔥
Natural Gas
Natural gas remains the most common fuel for home heating and cooking in many countries. It's delivered through a national grid and billed per unit. While gas emits CO₂ when burned, modern condensing boilers achieve up to 94% efficiency — making it far cleaner than older models. Dual-fuel tariffs bundle your gas and electricity into a single plan, often at a discount. Knowing your annual gas usage in kWh is the best way to compare deals accurately.
🌍
Green Energy
Green energy tariffs supply your home with electricity matched 100% by renewable sources — wind, hydro, or solar — through the national grid. Choosing a green tariff has no impact on reliability or service; it simply means your supplier purchases renewable energy certificates equivalent to your usage. Some suppliers go further, investing directly in new renewable generation. 1ENERGY only lists verified green suppliers who meet strict environmental criteria, so you can switch with full confidence.
☀️
Solar Energy
Solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. A typical 4kWp home system generates around 3,400 kWh per year — covering roughly 60–70% of average household demand. Excess electricity can be exported back to the grid and sold through Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) schemes. Adding a battery storage system lets you store surplus energy for night-time use, pushing self-sufficiency to 90%+. Solar PV systems typically pay back their cost within 6–9 years.
💨
Wind Energy
Wind turbines — both onshore and offshore — are among the cheapest forms of electricity generation available today. The UK leads Europe in offshore wind capacity, with turbines capable of powering thousands of homes from a single unit. When you choose a wind-backed green tariff, you're directly supporting the expansion of this low-cost, zero-emission technology. Wind power also creates thousands of skilled engineering jobs and is a cornerstone of the global net-zero transition.
🏠
Heat Pumps
Air-source and ground-source heat pumps are the future of home heating. They work by moving heat from outside air or the ground into your home — even in freezing temperatures — delivering 3–4 units of heat for every unit of electricity they consume. That makes them 300–400% efficient, compared to just 94% for the best gas boilers. Government grants are available to reduce upfront installation costs. Pair a heat pump with solar panels and a green electricity tariff for a truly zero-carbon home.

Is Solar Right For You?

Solar energy is one of the most powerful ways to cut your bills and your carbon footprint simultaneously. Here's everything you need to know before you invest.

£1,200
Average annual saving for a 4kWp home system with battery storage
25 yrs
Typical manufacturer performance warranty on solar panels
0°C
Minimum temperature required — solar panels work in daylight, not just sunshine
1.3t CO₂
Annual carbon offset from a typical home solar system

South-facing roofs at a 30–40° pitch maximise generation, but east- and west-facing panels still deliver 80–85% of the potential output. Modern microinverters mean partial shading from a chimney or tree no longer wipes out your entire array — each panel operates independently. Most installations qualify for 0% VAT, and the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) means your supplier must pay for every unit you export. 1ENERGY's free solar calculator gives you a personalised estimate in under a minute.

Common Questions

Will switching energy supplier cut off my supply?
Absolutely not. Energy supply and energy billing are separate things. When you switch supplier, your gas and electricity continue to flow through exactly the same pipes and cables. The only change is who sends your bill. There is no interruption whatsoever.
What's the difference between a unit rate and a standing charge?
The unit rate (measured in pence per kWh) is what you pay for every unit of energy you actually use. The standing charge (pence per day) covers the cost of keeping your property connected to the grid, regardless of how much you consume. Both figures matter when comparing tariffs — a low unit rate with a high standing charge can cost more for low-usage households.
Is green energy more expensive than standard energy?
Not anymore. Thanks to falling renewable generation costs, many green tariffs are now priced the same as or below standard tariffs. Some of the cheapest deals on the market are 100% renewable. 1ENERGY shows you the cheapest green option alongside the cheapest overall plan for every search.
How long does a solar panel installation take?
A typical 4kWp installation on a domestic roof takes one to two days. After scaffolding is erected (if needed), the panel mounting system is fixed to your roof, panels are secured, an inverter is wired in, and the system is connected to your consumer unit. Your installer will then register your system for the Smart Export Guarantee so you can start earning from day one.
Do I need a smart meter to get the best deals?
Not necessarily, but a smart meter unlocks several advantages: accurate bills (no estimates), access to time-of-use tariffs that reward off-peak usage, and eligibility for some of the best EV charging deals. Installation is free and takes about an hour. 1ENERGY can arrange a smart meter upgrade at the same time as your switch.
